What's Happening this Weekend at GHS

*Orchestra will be traveling to All-State Competition this weekend.
*Drew Neff and Austin Amick will be wrestling in the SCHSL AA Wrestling Individual Championships.
*The baseball team will begin their tournament Saturday with an 11:00 start at the brand new baseball park.
*Rugby Match Friday afternoon (tonight) at 5PM.

Next week we will have the Senior Citizens Banquet and the play Little Women. Call 821-1900 for more information on attending or obtaining tickets.

Superstars at GHS

Congratulations to some of Gilbert High Schools shining stars:

-Mrs. Sue Ellen Shealy for being nominated the most influential teacher of the senior class. Watch out for her at graduation when she wears that special robe signed by all of the class of 2010.

-Congratulations to wrestling coach Tracy Gooding for being named the North/South Wrestling Coach.

-I would also like to congratulate Drew Neff for his 1st place finish at Upper State Individual Wrestling Tournament. Drew, along with Austin Amick will also represent GHS in the North/South Match.

-Congratulations to Mrs. Julie Rojeck, Career Development Facilitator for winning another grant in our effort toward recycling at GHS.

-Congratulations to Tiffany Galloway and Andrew Young for making All-State Band. Rock on!

21st Century Vision for GHS

In the last four months, the Gilbert High School curriculum focus team has been researching 21st century schools. We are diligently working on re-writing our mission, vision, and belief statements to reflect 21st century learning. The team broke up into sub-committees, who focused on each concept; mission, vision, beliefs, and motto. We are currently completing the final touches to present to the faculty and the school improvement council. The faculty and staff at Gilbert High School are very excited about the innovative technology, scheduling, and course offerings that we will be able to offer students in the future. Please look out for these opportunities when the registration process begins. Remember that we love your children and want them prepared for either post secondary education or the work force. We will do Whatever it Takes!

I would like to wish all of our Gilbert friends and family a Happy New Year! We hope to continue academic excellence in 2010.
It is so hard to believe it is 2010, but here we are. We have a busy month ahead of us. End-Of-Course (EOCEP) testing begins on Wednesday, so if your student is taking English 1, Algebra 1, Algebra 1 Part 2, Physical Science, Biology, or US History, then they will be taking an EOCEP exam. Remember that this test counts as a final exam which is 20% of the final grade for the course.
We also have exams coming up January 12, 13, and 14. Again, the final exam counts as 20% of the final grade for the course. If you would like to see the district exam schedule, there is a link on our home web page.
Seniors who are passing a course can exempt the final exam for that semester course. If they do choose to exempt the exam, they will not be required to attend that class during exam days. Please keep in mind that seniors still have to be signed in and out of school via normal procedure. Many times, seniors get a little confused about embedded classes. Embedded classes are year round (180 days) and they need to be present to take the embedded mid-term exam which counts 10% of their grade. Please make sure that your student is present for their embedded midterm exams.
As you can see, we will be closing out another semester at GHS. The spring semester will begin after the Martin Luther King Holiday when we return to school on January 19. Please contact teachers or Student Services for any more information.

Seasonal Performances

Gilbert High School has several performances and displays prior to the Winter Holidays. On Monday, December 14, the Gilbert High School Chorus will be performing at LOPACC with the Gilbert Middle School chorus. The performance will begin at 7PM.
On Tuesday, December 15, the Concert Band will also have a performance at LOPACC. Their concert will begin at 6:30 PM. On Wednesday, December 16, Mrs. Millers photography students will have a winter art display in the Rauche Media Center at 6PM. Please join us for these wonderful occasions.

H1N1 Clinic at Gilbert High School

On Friday, November 20, you should have received a letter and information pertaining to the H1N1 Flu Vaccine Clinic that is tentatively scheduled for Monday, December 7, 2009. Please return your permission letter on Tuesday, November 24 so that we will know how much vaccine we will need on that day. All permission forms can be sent to Mrs. Ruth Lepir, our registered nurse. We hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity to protect your child from the H1N1 Flu Virus. If you have any questions, please call us at 821-1900.

Outstanding Band Students Travel to Winthrop

Congratulations to the following band students who have been selected to attend the 30th Annual Winthrop University Band Clinic on November 20. We have such wonderful talent at Gilbert High School. We salute these wonderful students and wish them a happy weekend doing something they love.....playing music.
